Like most people, I’ve always thought that dreams happen in your imagination but probably not in the actual world – and if your dreams are too big, well then, your dreams might just be impossible. That all changed the day we picked up my older sister from the airport when she returned from her missions trip to South Africa. During the drive home, she shared how her team was able to distribute clothing, shoes, and even electronics. Only one thing was missing, she said: “Many of the people couldn’t see. I felt so sorry for them! I wish we were able to give them glasses.” That statement echoed over and over again in my mind: I wish we were able to give them glasses. This was now my calling — I had to make this happen.
So my journey began. I worked with optometrists, faculty leaders, and classmates to make this a reality. Finally, during my own missions trip to Freedom Park, South Africa, 1000 people walked away with new glasses! Mission accomplished – almost. This thrilling experience lit a fire inside me. I wanted to do even more. That’s what led me to found Vision is Our Mission, a non-profit organization for the purpose of providing vision screening and glasses in developing countries. Our ultimate goal is to provide vision screening during missions trip and to reach as many countries as possible.
